Computer Services at the University of Rochester have made space available for the storage of student web pages on uhura. While students must look to the U of R for support in the creation of these pages, the Eastman Computer Music Center will begin serving and supporting audio files for use by students and faculty. Below are a few guidelines to aid in the creation and preparation of sound clips that students may wish to incorporate into their U of R web pages.
I - The Composition Department will be purchasing Adobe Pagemill for both PC and Macintosh platforms. These will be available for student use in Eastman's fifth floor computing center. Create your HTML code, then upload it to uhura following the guidelines at: http://uhura.cc.rochester.edu Here are a couple extra hints:
- Scan all photos and graphics on reasonably high quality equipment (Kinkos)
- Be sure to save these graphics in the gif, jpeg, or pict formats
- Take a look at several pages already on the web. You can see the source code by choosing "View Document Source" in your browser's Menu lists. Use this study as a model for your own pages.
II - Audio clips (10 max) must not total more than 20 minutes.
III - These clips must be prepared by the student on a single high quality cassette or DAT tape. If you choose the DAT format, please use 44.1k.
IV - The audio clips should be recorded at the beginning of Side A. If you are submitting a DAT tape, be sure each clip begins with a program ID#
V - An accompanying sheet must give the following information for each sound clip recorded on the cassette in order:
Composer
Full Title (including movements)
Year of Composition
Name of file link as it appears on your page (see below)
VI - We must also require that the student supply a form of release that is signed by all performers. The Eastman Computer Music Center will keep these release forms on file.

The point at which you wish to create a link from your web page to your soundfile should contain the following address:
http://www.world-wide-music.com/esm/name.ram
Of course, "name.ram" refers to the name of your excerpt. Example - oboe.ram.
Once the above guidelines have been met, give the cassette to Greg Wilder and allow two weeks for the soundfiles to appear on the web. Any questions regarding the guidelines discussed above should be directed to Greg Wilder:
